Gosh, this is tortuous. Apart from the fact that I haven't got any idea how the pairs are linked "cryptically" (I did wonder whether one was allied to an anagram of the other), I had 33A from the start, and now find it has to start with an E, not a T. Is that right? Thanks.

33a starts with an E.

I also found it tortuous but, after a sudden PDM, it all ended smoothly. Stick with it.

Very true, but not what Vlad had in mind, I'm afraid. I had the same problem originally with 12a although I wasn't entirely happy with my answer.

I have started later than all you clever people who have finished! I have no idea what I am looking for as the "see instructions" entries.
I still need an answer for 23d. Very unfair that all the crossing letters, apart from the last, are "see instructions" candidates! A nudge, please!

23d is an anagram - anagrind about .... I have all the proper answers, apart from 28, but no nearer making the connections.

I have all the "normal" answers apart from 6d. I haven't a clue what's going on with the rest. From the checking letters I have I can identify 3 possible tennis players but that's probably just my tennis brain clutching at straws. I have a very probable first name at 20d and some of my extra letters spell out an abbreviation of a first name. Beyond that I'm clueless and frustrated! I also seem to have too many answers that are normal without the redundant word/letter. Help!
