PS this is a long excerpt from an article called Emile Zola and
written for Wiki - so, there may be better articles.
I only extracted what I thought relevant

Um, given that this forum doesn't seem to provide any way to unsubscribe from emails notifications to a thread once started, would folk please keep chat to email or a new thread?

Yes Timdownieuk, this is exactly what I did suggest to Meursault
at the beginning of my last post.
I should, in fact, have given the site address rather than copy/paste
the excerpt - Sorry!

I don't know there is any reason to apologise, Pigale. If a person doesn't consider the consequences of receiving alerts (I never opt to receive alerts) then other people who post comments can hardly be blamed for that. And surely some of the best conversations go off piste ? And I have to say that your comments have been very educational, probably more informative than the original subject matter. So, thank you very much for your comments, Pigale, wherever you post them...

Thank you Meursault - See you on the PCT! I dislike pettiness so
prefer to keep away from it!

PS - Please let me know how you get on with Zola, and the choice
of novels if you decide to read one. Better post on the PCT though! :)

I’m sorry meursault but I find your response arrogant. I’ve used many web fora but I have never come across one that allows email subscription without *also* allowing unsubscription.

It would be no effort for you to take your conversation to email or a new thread. It’s called “courtesy to other forum users”.

“The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them.
To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it.
To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.” - Douglas Adams.

Though many wise men have expressed the same thought. So, let's examine 'arrogance'. "I think that I'm a suitable person to be a moderator..." : well that fits in there for me...

Ah, there it is. "Only those who do not seek power are qualified to hold it." - Plato.

So really the whole thread is a little bogus wouldn't you say ? So what's the harm, in a couple of people having a profitable discussion on it, and making it in some way worthwhile after all ? Or is there no generosity at all in you ? And you would prefer to chastise a woman for offering helpful reading tips ? Big man !
