I think I need new specs, too. I misread the preamble as saying modifications were needed to five entries. Held me up for ages.

I'm finished but don't get 23d ....4 of the letters appeared from crossers, then the other fitted in the word to be replaced...so I have the grid answer but don't see where it came from..

23d Square lecturer taken in by devious act of fraud. sting ? for the devious act of fraud?

I have 6 of the answers that have to be modified - 6A, 1A, 42A, 23D, 30D and 1D. Please could someone help me find the others and preferably give me hints as to solving them. Also (and I must have made a mistake) 33A. Setter's hand taking credit away from institution's ability to conceptualise (8) IDEALIO?
I'm determined to finish this as I've spent hours on it!!!

33 A is Ideation, ability to conceptualise.

There are also thematic things at 45 A, 5 D and...I'll need to look out the others.

38d the grid entry is a 4 letter farm building.....whats been got rid of comes after this for defn giving performances.
45a 8 letters ...what you might throw at someone n whit e weather?!... get rid of the 1st 4 . Mushroom (as in grow fast adn cocktail are both defns)

5d 7 letters ..get rid of the 1st 3.....defn it's a grass and has 3 letter word for choke inside an old person/thing missing its last letter

Thank you everyone for all your help. Just five more clues to finish (that'll keep me busy this afternoon!) and working out what to do with the five letter word to complete the task. Thank you so much.
