I have APE - - R. There is no possible word, according to Chambers.
Where have I gone wrong?

Hi jazzlover, this is one of the nine answers that has to be adjusted before entry. 7d begins with o, from 'loud', the 'flash' in the clue.

Sorry, I meant 6a has to be adjusted.....

7D def is (r)aid to access.

Wordplay is: banks of Poole (PE) inside a word for an expert.

Finally I have all the extra letters and see what thematic treatment is required. I have 4 such words.

6 A is proving difficult.
Flash and Shock enveloping both ends of large megaphone (6)

Flash has two letters? Cannot find a word for shock. Assume megaphone is the def.

Also is 45a Mushroom cocktail (4) with thematic word become (5,4)?

I still have to work on 37A and D, 38D.

45 Is an 8-letter word. Mushroom = grow quickly, not a fungus.

6 A. Another word for megaphone - inside it has a four-letter thematic word. Flash gives 4 letters, shock (as in on the top of your head) gives another 4 and use both ends of 'large'.

Both 37s are normal, 38 D is thematic.
