Both 37a and worm part of 38a are new words for me.
38d is the last one remaining.

Not sure of where to enter the word in the grid.
Word for Cirrus seems to be the 5 letter word.

38 isn't as tricky as it first appears. The removed part follows the entry.

If you take away the cirrus, your remaining entries won't be real words - so you need a replacement. The removed letters/message is the biggest hint.

Marca, 1a is checking as in reining in - the answer is an 11-letter word but a four-letter thematic word has to be removed to make the answer fit - a word meaning relaxing.

I'm stuck on 1d too as well as 29a and 37a. Apart from that I'm done. I assume OIL is removed from LIMOUSINE and so on but no luck.

29a is a type of mend.

Orson 1d is an 8 letter word meaning suspect and yes an anagram is involved.

I've worked out the theme and got the nine occurences needing manipulation. I see a relevant five letter word in the middle...but I' stuck on finding a five letter replacement word so that the five linked clue answers remain words. Any help would be appreicated.

The five letter replacement word is pretty much a synonym of the first word spelled out by the extra letters. It's a verb and a noun.

Thanks, marca. I've got 1d now. I've finished it and yet have only found 8 thematic answers. It just show you can sometimes complete a crossword without understanding everything.
