Each clue has an extra letter in the wordplay.

1. Grammar School has dunces kissing Georgia's cheeks (6)

4. Charybdis recognises unions (6)

24. Jack returns little Eugenia to compound (6)
?AL?N?

Any help appreciated.

I'm not sure I understand the special instructions - if you take a letter out of a clue, must real words remain? I can't see how to do this in these clues!

I'm wondering if 24 might be GALENA (lead sulphide, a "compound") It seems vaguely related to "Eugenia"...

chrise.
The extra letter implies that the answer plus one letter is given by WORDPLAY.
For example, if the clue is From Lincoln, obtain produce (5)
Parsing would be Abe+get with beget as answer and A as the extra letter.

Does Eugenia have a nickname like Bess or Liz for Elizabeth?

I thought of Galena but where is Jack in Galena?

The extra letter in 24 is F

Thanks kobnut.
Jack is the Union Jack.
And Ena must be short for Eugenia.

Any hint on the other two?

For 1a, the word to enter is an American word for "he talks in a cheeky way", such as answering back.

4d, Charybdis is ME but the M is extra. Then a bodily feature meaning to recognize (rather obscure I think).

Thanks orson.
Was not aware of that body part meaning to recognize. Greek union indeed.

I think Atlanta's cheeks would have gotten me there quicker. I also thought G from Grammar would be a part of the answer.

May be back later. Still about 8 left.

The unclued grid entry in the last row seems to be part of a parody of a song where yellow is substituted by orange?

Yes, think orange, sunray, but I don't know why you mention yellow.

I've filled the grid and decoded the message but I'm grid staring for the 17 cells that form a cross. I can see a well-known poet, though.

It's unfortunate that the second song that contributes two pairs of unclued entries has been parodied, but that's not the parody that gives the other two entries. But don't take my word for everthing. I could have got the wrong end of the stick.

I think the original song had a yellow vehicle.
I thought Orange with the last row word was the parody.
I do not see where Orange can fit in the grid.
I do not know what the second word could be with the last row word.
I see 5a could have something to do with stars but have no idea
what to do with the longest unclued.
I am assuming it is more than one word.

How long is the name?
The 7 letter unclued could be a name but doubt that it is the one.

I have 36a beginning and ending with same letter but cannot parse it. What is old violin section?

Still struggling with NW corner.

Sunray, I think you perhaps have the wrong song. The parody giving the two unclued entries wasn't known to me before today, the other unclued entries / 'another song' is very well-known.

The name is relatively short and isn't in the grid.
