Thanks again Mersault. What I meant to say was that I had not needed to find all of the extra letters before completing the grid. Now that I have done so I see that you are correct and it identifies one of my favourite places and brings the whole puzzle to a lovely conclusion.

If the line in question joins up to a located object it is correct.

"Tye" is to wash (in a trough) and "PTO" is a well-known instruction. I am still somewhat baffled by this one, particularly 12ac for which I have 7 crossing letters but no idea what the full word might be ; and by 50 across (though a 5-letter word suggests itself) ; and by 51ac and 39 dn.

Barretter,
12a abbreviation for committee around money(m); mend is to repair ; 'a' followed by 3-letter word for bell where 2 of those letters enter the unchecked cell. Hope that helps.

Thanks very much, Uncle_W. Not a word I have come across before (not an unusual occurrence with The Listener). I think I have sussed what is going on by noticing a word in the far lefthand column and have found the ten letter phrase, but still struggling with 50 and 51 across and 39 down. Good luck to our man in Rome this afternoon.

All done now, but I am slightly troubled by the fact that the 5 lines do not complete the arena. Surely it would have been better if the dot in the SE corner could have been moved one cell to the left. Then a 6th line would have given the complete arena. (I hope I haven't given too much away here!)

Barretter Both answers for 50Ac and 39 Down are affected by the theme. Remember : "Numbers in brackets refer to grid entries". On that basis 50 Ac is a fairly common word for "exhausted" whilst 39 Down IS obscure, the cryptic reference being for a word for tide (3) follwed by a river (4). The cryptic part of 51 Ac is an old word for ON plus a word for throne ("....this castle hath a pleasant ______ ") but with the E then shoved to the end. Thanks for TYE, by the way.

50 think of a three letter word for a radical, IVR for Jamaica and one letter for died. Entry means exhausted. 51 short version of ancient plus word for throne with e shifted. Entry means with handle. 39 three letter word for tide plus name of river with four letters with two replaced by . Entry means seize Spenserian.

Sorry - the beginning of 51 is an old word for on not a short version of ancient!
