I take your point Escuan but that would have meant that right hand wall would have been.straight and not taken into account the "buttress" at the top right hand corner?

Thanks Primeprospect and Notrab, I think I have all the words but not enough dots! I can see two of the objects but not the third so far. Does 6 across have holes in it (I don't really understand its wordplay)?
I see my good wishes for our man in Rome seem to have worked, surprisingly.

No dots in 6A. Definition is first two words (it helps to think US).

Actually the definition word was a British word first, one that we exported to the colonies and they kept and we didn't. I saw that "to" defines the first three letters and "restore to normal alignment" the second three, but the word doesn't exist, so presumably it's one of the answers that appears in an etymology somewhere but I can't find it, unlike 45down, which I did find. As the words with dots in are, in their entirety, non-words, I thought this might be one but it isn't, so my search for the extra dots continues. Ho hum

You will find 6 across in Chambers if you look under fossett-seller!

Having put my brain into gear (unlike Rosberg and Hamilton) I now see that I have enough dots to draw the shape around the three objects (having now found the third one, thanks to Wikipedia's diagram). I was thinking I needed nine but obviously I don't. Thanks again Notrab.

6 dots

I think the drawing looks better if you place some of the dots on or near the edges of the cell. Nowhere does it say the dots have to be in the centre of the cell.

Have the whole thing done apart from one letter, rather annoyingly. 46a has two spellings and as I can't see the wordplay, second letter could be i or e. I've guessed i.

Could someone explain the wordplay?

Thought this was very enjoyable, other than 6a not being in the book.

Thanks
