Face = Map
F = Following
Take the 'f' (From, in the clue) and you get Ace, one.

Thanks for soothing the irritation - I can now watch the Grand National at peace (until my horse falls at the 1st!).

Yes. 38 : take out US, then you just have Indian's cloth for definition. Invert is over Ar, gives SARI. 45 : IDLESSE; I don't know in particular whether Housman used it ('this' poet), but it is listed as poetic. Take 'and bile' from 'sensible lad die', then anagram

MandyRob, I was puzzled for a while by some of your question. LI is wrong. If you've got the correct 'drawn' ie dropped letters from the down clues, you'll be able to look up the poem. It is part of a larger verse. At the end of the poem (available on wiki), the age is told. If it is the setter's age then that is coincidental.

Only just registered to ask my first question. Hope I'll be able to help others too.

This one I have got the theme and shading and all but one solved:
24a Form of chevron against hard copy.
I have made a few wrong turns along the way but I'm fairly confident about the down clues giving me -SHA-E. My Chambers has ASHAME or ASHAKE but can't work this one out

The Listener is one I look at most weeks and if I can make a decent start I'll persevere if I've got time and very satisfying if I get to the end. If not I'll switch to the Jumbo. Found this a challenge but now so close! Thanks.
