That's brilliant Sudokulover. Nice clue now I have the answer. I was thinking a chevron is like a V but couldn't work it out. Just the (6) rather than (6,hyphenated) or (6,two words) wasn't helpful but you can't expect the Listener to be too helpful I suppose.

Finally there with the picture but one thing left. I can't understand 32 across and why it is wow. That also gives me 26 down a word beginning with spwn. Surely that's not right?

That's what I have, but that makes the clue to 17d wrong. 'id' in 'woo' does not work. It has to be 'id' in 'wow'.

Because the clue references 32, which is 'woo' and not 'wow'. I think it is a bit tenuous to turn one into the other, but I am sure I must be missing something obvious....

wow is a Spenserian form of woo. Hence Ed's 32 is wow

WOW! Ha ha. I had originally marked 'Ed's' as the unwanted letters so was ignoring that. Doh! And I even mentioned the 'id' from idea, not realising that I was still ignoring the wrong thing in my brain. Thanks so much for putting me straight on that and to everybody else for the hints that got me through this one.
