wordplay gives an extra letter:
any letters I have so far aren't really much use as "things" need to change in the grid fill.
6d Losing a bit of composure in Kolkata's first game, knock out shaman (8)
9d Volcano nearly collapsed - two thirds of valley roads destroyed. (10, two words).........but there are 11 spaces in the grid???
26d Fame achieved in small town after flight from Scotland without second of pilots (7)

There are a lot of clashes in this crossword and some difficult clues. It would have helped if the preamble had said there were clashes. I'm only about halfway through. 14d also has 11 spaces but the clue says 10 letters.

6d - ANGEKKOK with a clash with 5a (and maybe others). I can't quite work out the word play. I don't know the others.

thanks orson - how does that parse
yes I've got 14d thanks
I've probably got about half too and I can see (even tho I haven't got all the required missing letters) what the across clues up to 38 spell out

You're a bit further than me, xwordfan. I cannot parse 6d and I haven't got 14d. Could you give some guidance as to how 14d works please? I've got HA?B?O????? but that's one space too many and I know there might be clashes.

For anyone else reading this the clue is:
Aquatic animal in mist covering market beside Australian lake (10 letters, 11 spaces, two words - and the clue gives rise to an extra letter not entered in the grid).

14 D. I've got an ordinary, non-clashing answer for this - defined by the first two words in the clue. I don't know how it parses, but all the letters fit (and work with other answers).

Xwordfan, I have Stardom, fame, for 26 D. (Stair/flight, with the 'i' ('second of pilots) removed. I'm not sure how the Dom part works.)

Orson - it's an aquatic animal (7,4) Your letters are correct
the mist is haar or possibly hoar so a or o could be the extra
market as in stock market (6 letters) + a l (australian lake)

Are my letters right for 14d, malone, because I cannot find any words that fit, never mind an aquatic animal? And how does the extra cell work? Thanks.

and 27a has clashers so your O won't fit with the aquatic animal
I expect you have filled in boat for it?
but the O and A clash with down clues
