I was hoping for a good challenge over Easter but this is just word guessing (most are obvious) and a boring word search for a jumbled letters. Very disappointed.

This is a clever idea drearily put together. It's a bit like sudoku in that you can fill virtually all of it and then find the last entry nullifies all that has gone before. I have the whole thing filled in, satisfying all the conditions, until 3SW (H-O-S by my thinking) which doesn't occur anywhere.

So what does that make 3SW? Neither HRONS nor HNORS is a word. Clearly I have something amiss in that corner. Help welcomed.

I disagree with your selection of letters since that gives two words that are in Chambers and neither will fit Cockie's pattern. The preamble tells us that 3SE is in Oxford Dictionary of English. An ODE answer can be got from 'officerS ON HOrseback.

Cockie, H_O_S is right, I think.
I agree that there is some frustration in this. Twice Ive entered answers that could be got from letter strings in the right places, only to find clashes later on. In fact, with that answer from 3SE the only way I could find a viable entry for16NW was to use the journalist's name. I think it's stretching things a bit to regard that as part of the 'excerpt'.

Yes it is HOONS but I'm stuck on 16NW. All complete otherwise.
It is a great puzzle. * means you need some of the missing word to add to the jumble. ; means there is a missing word between jumbles. I used lots of different highlight colours to code the whole thing for quick reference. eg. all NW clues in pink so I can find them quickly. Happy to help if anyone wants a hint.
