Thanks. I missed it even though it's the same word as in the third excerpt because I thought the second occurrence of 32SE was later. Now I see the first occurrence is in the headline and the second in line one (which I'd thought was the first).

I can't say I'm enjoying it much, but will press on.

The light in ODE is 3SE (7 letters) not 3SW which is HOONS (or so it seems). I can see 5 symmetric letters which have some significance, but the other 8 elude me, as does an ambiguity.

Is the OED word halcers? I don't feel great patience for this potentially good puzzle. There are several 38NW clues which is puzzling. I may be wrong with anight, Coles and dog. Sutra may be wrong at 24 as coths seems unlikely at 25 and doesn't help with something like pewter at 33. All rather tedious I fear but I shall plug on!
