Demeter, what did the husband and wife throw that became people ?

Dylan and Planks, I'm still staring at 1ac also, that is when I'm not falling asleep. So is it either 'ETJ' or 'TJE' which get substituted ?

Thanks to this forum I understand everything about this grid EXCEPT what the original word for 6ac was. Any elucidations most welcome .

Thanks very much for that Bambi123. I must say I find some of the "names" a bit marginal and I don't understand the rationale for their choice. Only one appears to mean "stone".

All done, nice one eXternal. Just four bits to tidy up. Cannot find C in husband's name, first R in wife's name, cannot get 1 down, although it doesn't matter, and cannot parse 21. Any ideas? The seven I do have are all anagrams of stones.

C: last word of 25ac
R: third word of 18dn
21ac: Think of a famous Nancy and take out an abbreviation for 'silver'.

1dn, do you mean before or after the thematic treatment? Before, it is a market town in north Oxfordshire. After, it is the rogue definition appearing last in the set of clues. The first three letters don't change.
