Thanks heisenberg, couldn't see for looking for first three. As for 1 down, was looking for three letter word for market, so was parsing it completely wrong. Makes sense now. Not that any of it mattered, just a niggle to get everything 'precise'.

Am all done but can't find the extra words defining the modified 20d just to double check I have the right substitution. Would be grateful for the info

It's the extraneous word in 9dn.

Very late in the day after Rugby in Paris I have a completed grid with seven modifications but am completely stuck on the barrel organ modification. Pointer to the appropriate entry will be very welcome

Very pleasant puzzle. Not understood all the changes but seems not to matter. Would love to know why golden is ko.... Knockout is sometimes said to mean something really good. Is that all there is to it?

Came to me going to sleep. It was the statue one. Needed to put king at the start and earl at the end. Silly me and tunnel vision.

Got all of the originals and changes too. Job done!
