That was stupid of me. No idea how I managed that. I assure you, I was not fD. ~~=(-8

Had WALLEYES (pl) written down but dropped the last E in the grid, which resulted in those "profession-oriented" socks.
Google did bring up some footwear advice for people who are on their feet all day.
Hey, some smart cookie could market that. Higher-priced ones for doctors & such.

ha-ha, thanks for the correction syzygy ([ ]). i'd guessed as much from Aristo's riposte - i was never much good at grammer!
cashiers was also my 1st guess until i got the last crosser, which i think was the last answer to go in.
holey unmatched are more usual for me.

there is of course, one (very old) profession, where the clients may be required to wear special socks but best not go there.

When going for a made to measure suit and asked "whether sir dresses to the left or the right ?" must present you with some difficulty trevor.
I imagine the term has the prefix ambi.
