Is 14ac an edible vegetable? I have the first 4 letters but I don't understand how the clue works. It's my last missing letter before I hunt down the obstacles (I have 4 of them already). Many thanks in advance.

Carpox1, you can deduce the second letter of 6dn by looking across the 2nd row which should reveal a significant name.

Barretter - think last 5 of a 7 letter fruit garden. Yes it is edible. I don't normally assist on here but although this puzzle is generally good I think it has significant flaws and excessive ambiguity - to say nothing of double unches which are an absolute no no.

I found this grid fill easy and I hi drawn a gamey picture. I hope the first abbreviation is at 1a. The poem has been found but I am struggling with the line required as I can make little of the extra characters do I suspect I am missing some final amendment before sending in the grid. Help would be appreciated .

Yes Rickye, the first abbreviation is at 1A. The second seems to make a stunted leg (I don't recall mention of Louis having suffered from polio - maybe the problem is a hip displacement...)

I couldn't resolve the final instruction without first knowing the exact line of poetry. Look up the theme in wikiedia, you'll find the line of poetry not very far down. The final instruction involves an addition to just one cell.

6D - the whole cluster is the answer, surely, not just 5 of them ?

My newly acquired brand spanking new 12th edition of Chambers (acquired for £2) from the local flea market says 6dn is a cluster of 5 stars in the constellation of the Bull. I understand 14ac now with the extra letter being an S, not E as I previously thought.

I'm just reporting what Chambers says. Apparently there are five very bright stars in the constellation of Taurus and they were considered to be the daughters of Atlas in Greek mythology and called H.....
S. Pugh, thanks. I now fully understand 14 across

Yes, there's plenty of scope for ambiguity in the clue, perhaps Chambers could flesh out their definition a little. And the daughters didn't necessarily number 5...well done for picking up your copy for £2 - probably only 5% of price from bookstore.
