Thanks, cunicular. That did cross my mind, but I can only think of Humphrey as having been one. Do the others date back a long way?

17d I have an answer that I'm fairly sure is right, but it isn't fully parsed. Definition is "male" - sometimes human but more often not.

25 is a type of sausage. Not sure that it's especuially 7's, though it is the term he would have used.
