Yes, it's incongruous next to the other brilliance. Even something as plain as "Almost rile up Gerry or Humphrey for example" would be better. Maybe it's view or vlei or voes for some brilliant reason. Maybe the crossword editor changed Arachne's original clue at the last minute... It's bothering me!

Gerry and Humphrey look fine; Chester is incongruous. I wonder if it's just a rare error?

Probably. The lack of cryptic wordplay and Chester instead of Arthur makes one wonder if there's a fiendish misdirection going on, but, paranoia aside, the answer we're all thinking of has to be the right one.
4d alone makes it all worth it!
