Not entirely convinced but I think it relies on looking at it as head land as opposed to headland.

having trouble with this one. guessing modification means that clues include a two letter word ,and you have to leave it out before entering non-word in the grid. got a few down solutions but crossing letters of across words. HMMMM. any help appreciated.

You're on the right lines - if you can get some downers that will lead to 1ac (which is fairly obvious, given your current thinking, though the wordplay is tricky), you'll be able to pick up some of the acrosses.

I have an answer for one across which ties in with the most recent posts as to how to deal with the other across clues.

The 2 letter word in my answer must be one of two options. Neither of them makes any sense to me as an answer to the clue but I am sure that I have the first and third word correct - I have 2D,3D and 5D.

Either way, I cannot make any of the across clues work by adding back either of the 2 letter combinations - am I totally up the wrong tree?

The wordplay of the across clues only works without the two letter word....the defn part only works with the two letter word.

To angst...

...in 10ac for example the wordplay is an anag of a six letter word around a letter for time. This is the grid entry and is not a real word.

Inserting the two letter word gives a real phrase which meets the defn part.

I've sort of finished, with only two clues left, both of which have only one real solution, but I can't satisfactorily parse them. Any help on 1D and 21A please?
