I can't understand the definition in 39ac.
"One designated Kipper is broad and loud" an Asian said (3). I think the answer is TIE. Any ideas?

A "kipper tie" is broad and loud (garish)

Tie sounds like Thai - an Asian

Tie sounds like Thai ('an Asian said'). I know kippers ties are broad - maybe they're loud too? Or maybe 'loud' goes with 'an Asian said ' - ie 'aloud, an Asian said'. These are just my thoughts and could be way off-target.

Thanks ever so much both of you. Is the answer to 40 VEENINGS in Chambers?

I think you have the "v" in the wrong place. The "John" refers to a famous 17th century poet. I presume this is all to do with a famous archaeological site but I don't understand the reference to 26 cells in the intro.

What I mean is that I can see a circle of 10 cells round the centre which spell out the site I am talking about, I presume the "discoverer"'s surname is very like the first name of my favourite film star *"Roman Holiday", etc) though I am missing three letters from it which I presume are provided by misprints in 37ac, 34dn and 38 down.

34D, yes but not 38. I haven't got all the misprints, either, but they don't seem an essentiial part of the solution. What bothers me more is that having found the 10-letter site, i can't make any sense of the rest of the instruction to highlight.

Ah, I had the wrong "road to the north" for 38 down: I was thinking of the motorway. So that makes 34 down the last "misprint". I am still missing its first letter as I don't really understand the clue even with the corrected definition. As you say (and as I said) the major problem is with the phrase "26 cells".

The "other" site seems to think there is a "joke" involved : can't say that I see it yet.

34 seems to be an obscure definition of "race". Tell me, what's the "other" site?
