No posts here yet - not suprising as it's a lot tougher than the recent run. With symmetry about the central column I'm confused as the extra letter appears to be G. Probably something wrong, but blowed if I can see it. Can't find any if the 6 type-1 entities to highlight.

the extra letter is from the last of the across answers.

Ah! I had bid instead of dig. Makes much more sense in that a "representation" no longer has to be of a vertically lsymmetrical letter. I know what to look for tomorrow.

Are the two long down answers (symmetrically positioned) that can also be members of the first thematic group among the 43 cells to be highlighted?

No; remember the highlighting has mirror symmetry around the middle row,

I think I've now spent more time staring at the grid than I did filling it! I still have nothing.

Look for a "representation" of the extra letter (a 3-letter word), suggested by the second thematic group (i.e. letters from down answers).

I've managed to fill the grid, but with quite a few gaps in the missing letters.

Could someone tell me what the missing letters are in 1A, 6A, 15A and 17A?

Thanks.

By missing I assume you mean extra:

G, N, A, T
