Have done the highlighting which enabled me to correct my mistake at 25d but would still like help with the across extra letters from 26

Rickye - for the missing across letters I have an alternative word for the young of a member of the group.
Finally got there after simplifying the left-most highlighted feature. Can't believe I didn't spot those two members, as they are the only two I had heard of!

PS Rickye you are looking for a 6 letter word (your 6th letter is incorrect and your 7th letter is the start of the next word).

Now, can someone please explain the wordplay for 17ac and 40ac?

40ac is DI(E)T - with E being the extra letter - then BY reversed, contained in TAGS.

17ac is the only one I still don't understand, although at one point I had about half a dozen that I thought I'd never understand.

17ac. Extra letter + first 3 of answer = crystal meths, folowed by 4 letter word for WILL With US dropped

That must be a contender for the most unnecessarily obscure clue in any crossword, ever.
