I see that Wan is apologising on another site that he has made the grid-stare too hard. I have found one of the type of things required, but am at a loss to find any others (which all must be as unusual as the 3 in the across clues), nit sure how to interpret overlapping and mirror symmetry. Is each pair mirror-symmetrical, or merely the whole thing? And is overlapping like this: greecegypthailandenmark or something else? I know the shape I'm looking for, but even drawing a rough set of the right number of cells doesn't produce any glimmer of light. Oh dear!

Wow! This has been a difficult fill but there at last though not sure that 35d is right as cannot find in my old chambers with an E as the 4th letter. Still struggling with the across extra letters and wondering if I am right with R at 9 down?

Mirror symmetry means that if, say row 2 column 2 is highlighted then so is row 12 col. 2. if row 1 Col 5 is highlit then so is row 13 col 5. Etc.

You are looking for a 3-letter word that goes buzz; the overlaps occur on the middle horizontal bar of each of the 3 letters.

Each pair overlaps by 3 letters.

Hmm. I take it we're looking for the outline of the thing that goes buzz, rather than a filled-in depiction. I have found three things that go cheep: anhinga, araponga and caracara, none of which has any mirror-image counterpart, and all of which I assume are red herrings. Are tye 6 things that go cheep very uncommon?

you're looking for the actual 3 letters - the word is spelled out. From memory, caracara is one of them (97.4% sure).

Cockie, if you share 'ara' on the middle row, isn't araponga the mirror-image of caracara ?

I need a nudge from someone please. I see the sense of the down clues and their letter relevance but the down clues are giving me a bird and presumably a sheep at 40 if J is the first letter. I cannot work out the extra letters from 26 to 39 but think I have G--L-NS which looks like gallons ?
