I have filled the grid but my knowledge of the theme is limited. Could someone tell me if the quotation is in the original language or translated?

Planks, it's in ODQ. If you have the concise edition of ODQ it's far easier to track down as the choice is more restricted there. The quotation is well known in translation, probably less so in the original language. It's one of only two quotations from the work that I can remember.

I've got as far as the very step and can see a block of letters which represent "ghosts in some form" but I don't understand how to "replace by something more orderly...producing new words". Do I put in the name of a nationality? Any hint gratefully received.

Have you found the quotation and drawn the shape? Replacing the letters is easier once you have done so.

Yes, I have the shape (of a chess-piece really) drawn in but I can't see what letters to put in. I assume the block of six letters of "the theme" has to be replaced but I can't see how.

Barretter - remove the six jumbled letters mentioned in the introduction and replace them top to bottom with a 6 letter word from the quotation. You could also narrow down the possibilities for the replacements as all the entries in the final grid must end up being real words.

If you think about what the 'chess piece' represents in terms of the quotation and who was inside it........
