Hi, Rusty!
Ah, yes, I see......I was led astray by my thinking that "container" was a solid object such as "tin"....!
I understand that "ting" is a sound surrounding the rest of the word.
But not my favourite clue......I agree with you.
I have had some nice surprises today, in hearing from several old friends who had somewhat dropped off the radar, during the year.....
I have had phone calls, letter and cards from such.......
I have resolved to work harder at keeping in regular contact in future!
Now, I must catch up with "Fifteen to One"--it is the Grand Final tonight.

ChrisE, you'll fare better than I would. I've never seen any JB films, nor have I read any of the books. They've just never appealed to me.

All in my youth, malone - my last encounter with JB would be about 50 years ago!

Nor would Halloween appeal to me even had I known it were a film!

ChrisE, Pigale, I'm sure our film choices wouldn't appeal to some people - each to their own!

Hello, Elle!
I am glad you see, Elle!
It was an odd kind of clue.
"Ether" is contained by "ting".
But it just about works, I think, if we accept that "ting" is a sound!
In my family at home, a "ting" is a thing!
You will be pleased old friends are contacting you at this festive season.
I noticed the shops were much busier today.
I have milk to get, and that's about it, I think.

Hi, Rusty!
I came across a new word (for me) in the puzzle..."socle".... did you know that one?
Three clues that especially appealed to me were 9a: considered ; 25a: discretion; and 14d: stateliest
"Fifteen to One " was a close run Final at the end... a very close finish between the remaining two contestants.
The person whom I had expected to win did so in the end.
A well fought battle - and a take home prize of £40,000!
The winner thought he might go on a World cruise!
Jolly Good Luck to him!
Are you going to the Pine Cone tomorrow with any of your granddaughters?

Hello, Elle!
I had not come across "socle" before.
I do not think I have ever seen Fifteen to One.
I think Miss O and me may go to Pine Cone on Sunday.
She is out tonight, and busy tomorrow.
Miss L-B is working the weekend, and Miss ATW is coming to see me on Monday.
So, that's my plans for the weekend.
I am wondering if Eurosport will have the skiing on tomorrow and/or Sunday.
Hope so.

I walked out of "The Wizard of Oz" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". The film Halloween sounds ghastly, but I don't watch any films with violence in them. Acually I hardly watch any films.
Read several books a week instead. Currently "A Cycle of Cathay", "Erebus" and a trashy murder story. Cakes made, fell asleep. Now have to force myself to stick the walls together. They need to dry properly before putting the roof on.
