Mouse glitch ?

Well, well, well. What a tempest in a teapot !

Hardly a world-shaking issue but, when someone goes ballistic about a minor point raised on a thread, it warrants a response.
Chrise merely stated his reason for choosing another clue. That doesn't justify the diatribe he received, especially after trying to deflect further trouble with “... let's move on ...” but, like the proverbial dog with a bone, the antagonist would not let it go.
I'm disappointed by the fence-sitters. As they say in the US, “Grow a pair.”
It wasn't so much a question of correct usage, as shying away from speaking up about the harangue.
Bravo, GK, & well said! Obviously a man of principle.
Also thanks to Trevor, for the zinger @19. Good one.

The links provided by this person are examples of incorrect usage; extremely common on the Web. Facebook et al are certainly not persuasive, and newspapers frequently fall short of the mark because the writers simply rely on spell-check. Where are the editors?

Certainly not sound arguments, and his posts are reminiscent of trolls found on discussion boards, screaming obscenities at everyone who has a different opinion.
Ad hominem attacks are the usual response from someone who has a dodgy leg to stand on, or none.
I liked this statement: “Stick to what you understand, syzygy, before you sound off.”
Good advice that he should follow.

My references were from credible & respected sources. Here are some more.
Perhaps Oxford and Strunk are not acceptable either. If so, that is astounding arrogance, & worse, ignorance.

A tip for those:

Apology? Yes! He can start with one to Chrise for the abuse on PR 172.

As for Cicero - merely a quote, but ... if the shoe fits ...

... and The Beat Goes On ...

Cheers.

"Life is too short to stuff a mushroom". (Shirley Conran)

and as the late, great Bernard Levin wrote (or words to this effect!)

"Nothing matters very much and most things don't matter at all".
Though I might have argued with him about that, had I ever been lucky enough to meet him.

Thanks, busby. Still smiling and about to have a good day with a new friend at wonderful Wheatley Gardens.

Thanks for everyone's contribution, and especially for syzygy's support.

As I said on the other thread, I am prepared to accept that the s' is used for singular possessives of words ending in s (but I did mutter under my breath "though generally incorrectly").

I say again - "Let's move on."

Not quite sure I agree with Shirley, Rosalind.
Love a nice big mushroom stuffed with chopped tomatoes, cheese, herbs and topped with breadcrumbs and a bit more cheese then slowly baked.

Hope you enjoy Wheatley Gardens.
I'm about to "google" the place and picture myself there ;-)
