Still slogging through this one... I have a full grid but can't see the message in the columns - all my bright ideas involving the initial grid elements (assume this must mean the ones that are there before we put any answers in) seem to mean ambiguities as there are more than one of the relevant letter in some columns.

Anyone want to give a hint that might get me over the line?

The preamble notes which letters to highlight in the two columns that contain an ambiguity.

oh blimey. i think my head has been well and truly fried by this crossword! can't believe i failed to spot that in the preamble... thank you kilgore trout :-)

Could someone please put me out of my abject misery. No matter how many times I read the clues I can see that 8,14,20,29,31 and 2,5,7,15,17 & 23 are 12ed.That makes 11 - i.e. 1 short, and if I didn't know better, I would say that I was 100% +ve of all my answers!! Please don't tell me 18 is a 12 of an archaic spelling- because if it is, I think the clue is very unfair.

No need - I've just learnt to count.

I think that have a correct grid, including the 12 highlighted words and the message around the perimeter. However, I cannot link these to the title. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Many thanks in advance.

Jackdaw - your thematic highlighted letters represent pre decimal money for five eighths of the title.

Many thanks Unclued. I guessed from a previous post and the hint about the initial grid that pre decimal money was involved, but I could not see the connection. So obvious when pointed out to me. I will now kick myself.
