Simon - you certainly didn't go too far with that - help much appreciated. Thanks as well to highlighter. Now I hope I can make some progress.

I'm quite sure that I have the correct term for the last step -- what I have is definitely a "rearrangement of all of the elements seen in the initial grid." But I don't know what the term means and I don't understand how it could be cryptically represented by the title. Is this something that an American like me isn't likely to know? If so, can someone give me a hint about how to find the information I'd need for enlightenment?

jaye: I'm not as far along as you, so I can't help directly, but a similar question to yours was posted on another site and drew the following response, which I hope you'll find helpful:

"...the thematic phrase is very colloquial, and it's unlikely an American would know it, even if you were of a certain age. Put the phrase you have (with spaces) into Google, and the first entry takes you back to school and you should get the cryptic connection with the title."

The final term: I've been grid-staring for hours, can see a six-letter ordinal in cols 1-6 - is that right? - but can't see anything in 7-12; any hints, anyone? ONEPO not ringing any bells....

greengage, you should be seeing a six-letter cardinal, not an ordinal. I'm a bit underwhelmed by the endgame, so I'm not 100% certain my selection is right, but after that I have two three-letter words. The whole lot relates to elements you can see in the initial blank grid.

ONEPO is a proportion of something fuller, if I'm on the right lines, but it's all very tenuous.

Can anyone explain 1, 22, and 29? I have the answers but bits of the wordplay (all of 29's wordplay) elude me.
1 - I don't see how the outside letters of the answer are indicated by 15 formerly (which I assume refers to the answer to 15).
22 - The answer appears to be a jumble of some of the letters of CHUCK WAGON, but there's nothing to indicate the deductions.
29 - Completely baffled by this. I assume it's one of answers that are 12ed. My entry can be 12ed to give two words, neither of which seems to fit the clue.

Dryden,

22 is an anagram of HUC and WAG (the contents of CHUCK WAGON).

1. AA is a former film certificate (which is now called '15').

29, unfortunately I'm as confused as you.

Please tell me 5,8,19 and 29 are 12ed. These are the last 4 answers I need, but if they are not 12ed, I have SERIOUS problems.

5, 8, 29 (I think, but don't understand the clue, see below) are 12ed. 19 isn't.
