Did I say last week's was difficult? This made it look a doddle!

Two definitions I don't like - 9a and 14d - and 23a is SO obscure (if I've got it right!)

23 is a very poor attempt at a homophone in my view.

I quite agree, I thought it was easy as I solved 1,2 & 3 across straight away but after that .....nothing. I will persevere.

It was the obscurity of the city in 23 that struck me (though I have in fact been there!)

..........the homophone is OK (try it on the Wikipedia reference) as pronunciation in that part of France differs from standard French.

It seemed that you were referring to a different city and it puzzled me, as there is only one way to pronounce this city. Sorry
