Thank you jazzgirl. I printed off your copy but would only want to continue on a regular basis if it was available to download

Just for once I have totally given up! It seems that this weeks is aimed at Francophiles. I gave French up after O level, and still haven't seen enough of this country to want to go abroad, and too old to change now!

One French (un or une) is often used in cryptic crosswords along with French "of" (de or du or des) but I had to check on the French city after guessiing the bird

I think that I have just gone into "sulk mode" because I found it so difficult. Apart from the top right corner, which I found easy, I could not get enough words across or down, to suggest what other words I might be looking for. Perhaps, at leisure, over the week end, with some of the help given here, I might have another go.

I forgot to say that I am familiar with 'le', 'de', 'el', 'sur',
"dans" etc. I am just a grumpy old man who couldn't cope this week!

So glad to hear that so many of the regulars are struggling, as am I. Thanks for the clue about the countess. Of course she is a fantastic actress and it is so obvious when one has the answer. I am also stuck on that French city, and the bird and the Dog.. The lower left hand corner seems to be very tricky but I will persevere.

Hi mondrian
The Dog is just the German word. I thought the definition was dodgy for this one.

Thanks chrise but as I know no German I am a bit stumped. Will ask a German friend.
