I'm at the stage where I have the message about atomic numbers but don't know where to go next. I haven't found the two word phrase in the grid either! However I have seen carbon and boron. What's the next step? Thanks for any hints.

Unclued, the second word of that message in its singular form should show you how to scan the grid for the two-word phrase. Once you have found it you will probably need Wikipedia to help with the final stage.

Seem to be all done but nagging doubts remain:
Can't fathom the (5?) letters between "USING" and "IN EVERY" in the message and can't understand the relevance of the warning. Any hints very welcome.

Thanks dryden I have found valence electrons but the last bit of the instruction eludes me. I have .....atomic no 6 but it still leaves one clash. I'm confused.
Caphrist - you are missing D obtain. Read the message clockwise from the first letter of 5ac.

Thanks, Unclued. I just couldn't fathom "obtain" although the rest of the message had allowed me to finish. Just the relevance of the warning to worry about now.

Unclued - you may have been right the first time, and that is relevant to the warning.

Could someone give a hint as to how to distinguish between the two options and hence resolve the clashes? Either seems equally justifiable (despite the warning).

It is only possible to leave the right number of thematic letters in the grid for one of the options, Ozzy.

Thanks - all done now. Chemistry was never my strong point. I take it that the inner ring doesn't have a message. I've just drawn a circle through the two letter Es. The spacing in the second ring seems a bit strange but hey oh who cares!
