I would have thought the answer would be isomer, but obviously it doesn't fit

Thank you, chris g! Wherever did you find this? I've got a Biochemistry diploma ( a side line) and have never heard of it!!! (perhaps I wasn' t listening that day?!)

If it's any consolation, elle, I've a degree in Chemistry and taught the subject for 30 odd years and I've never heard the term - in fact I don't understand what it means from the definition, and Google hasn't helped much either!

Thanks, Chris! that makes me feel much better! To my mind, 'isomer' fits the clue - it just unfortunately isn't the answer!
