Great heavens! I'm really sorry. I went into the garden to tidy up one or tow items and have only just realised the time.

I also feel very bad about the "rising". I've done this more than once and will watch out for it in future. I could possibly argue that rising = revolution BUT I will not. It should really be a "down" clue (strictly speaking). So, SORRY.

One could argue that rising = revolt and revolt = to turn back (Spenser) ... let's not go there.

Don't be too hard on me.

1. ‘treat’ rogue (anag ind) = atter; policeman = cop; ATTERCOP = an ill-natured person (or, a spider) Chambers defs.

2. make the other side = cross; text = words; CROSSWORDS = for our entertainment

3. male publicist = adman; embracing ‘a’ = adaman; sharp point = tine; ADAMANTINE = impregnable (Chambers def).

4. subtractive anag (lacks & version) of ‘girly chain letter’ – ‘clarity’ = LENGTHIER = more long-winded

5. against = v; rising ‘to’ = ot; royalty = ER; VOTER = (N Am) colonist {Chambers Thes} and = a voter set up for.... (Chambers Dict)

Wow. I had even tried using V for against with ER and it didn't occur to me. I've never heard voter used that way. You're a sneaky one, Jolan.

Just curious, jolan: I tried to find "voter" in that sense in Ch. Th. online & found nothing. How did you find it?

Damn - Like GK, i thought of Voter but didn't find any relevance online.
i suspect that my answer 'yanks' might have stopped others looking for the right answer, i'm sure somebody would have solved it (AB for instance, hope he is OK).
thanks again Jolan.

Looked in my enormous, ancient Webster's unabridged and it isn't there either.

Excuse me butting in!
I looked up "colonist" in my Chambers Dictionary (2003).
One definition is,
"A voter set up for election purposes (US hist)."
Any help?

Chambers 12th shows exactly the same as Rusty says
