hi livs,
i remembered a few items of a list of phonetic alphabetic meanings. i googled "b for mutton" (including "s) and got a heap of cockney-based definitions. try that .

Cheers, dizoz - never heard of it before. I see there are alternatives, so it might take a lot of experimentation.

I'm assuming that you have to associate one letter with each clue, and then put into the clue the word the letter is 'for', and that none of this is indicated by the clue as given to the solver. The instructions seem a bit 'foggy'/badly written: I asked DH for help interpreting them and his first question was, "Does it mean there's a word in each clue made up of some of those 13 letters?". We then came up with alternative ways the instructions might work. I think instructions should be clear, otherwise what's the point?

(Felt much happier after giving up in disgust, having some key lime pie & strawberries and watching a recording of last night's 'Only Connect' and scoring highly against the contestants - yay!)

I did get one answer immediately I read it last night: 13D, I think. But then I ground to a halt. Will print out the cockney slang list from wiki & try again.

I also notice that you gave this hint as post #2. Thank you for your patience, dear dizoz! How far have you got with the actual crossword?

I have the same letter added to 4dn and taken out of 26ac but both seem correct. Also 14dn and 12ac I have answers to but the 'extra' bits in the answers don't appear in the alphabet rhymes. Getting a bit confused here.

This is my first Genius. I wanted to try it as one of my grandfathers was born in Lambeth (if you get my drift)
So far only a few filled in, one of which has 4 letters in the answer which are not shown at all in the wordplay. Am I on the right track or completely barking ?

Think the penny has dropped about the rhyme but still not sure about 26 and4.

For 4, I think you need to remove a letter, rather than add one.

I've now done the top right corner and it's spread out into long answers in other areas, but I can only parse the add/lose clues - even though I've got feasible answers to the others, either the 'special instructions' seem irrelevant (e.g. 10A, 11A) or part/all of the clue is incomprehensible, even when I've got the answer (e.g. 12A, 17A part, 6D whole) PLUS I've no idea about the 'special instructions' for those.

Is this really to do with the Cockney alphabet? Because I printed off the wiki ones and they don't seem relevant at all.

Oh, and although I have 4D, I can't see what you're supposed to add or subtract.

Am writing this off as another duff one.

I just read this thread back again, and was struck by the phrase 'some rhyming alphabetical lists' - the Cockney ones don't rhyme.

I would write more, but that 'Pajama Game' advert is seriously annoying me.
