I was typing when pendragon had answered. O for head ?

Head = nob. The three letters you have left give you
O for all, or said quickly might give you some protective clothing :-)

I am still unsure which of the two options of elf or ..... to use for 21D. Archaic spelling or modern?

nlb: I favour the modern spelling as it also refers to a famous washing up liquid. I found this puzzle to be really entertaining, and a clever piece of setting by Paul (enjoyed Saturday's Prize as well!)

I'd appreciate opinions on 23D. I'm sure you all have it by now.

This is not one of the 13 letter clues since a letter must be removed (a K) to provide the answer.

However, the answer COULD also work as one of the letter clues: "N for ....".

It can't be both, so ....?

23 dn is one where you take a letter away. It could have been N for... Except N is used in 18 and it wouldn't have parsed correctly that way.

N is also used (removed) in 3D. Nothing to do with "N for ...".

It's just a coincidence I guess, or the compiler might have thrown in a 14th letter to confuse the issue. 23D is a red herring and must be treated as a "remove" clue.
