Can anyone give me a hint for the theme?

I've solved lots of the clues, but have no idea how to start filling the grid.

Thanks.

demeter - I have got my answers to work (so far) by omitting S E A R C and H.

Still not a clue on the theme, but practically all of the grid full. If anybody can give any suggestions for 40ac (_O_ING), 49ac (_OIN->JOINER?) or 2d (OI_UL->CHOICEFUL?), I'd be very happy indeed!

You're right about 2dn : subtract "slant" from "technical fouls" and you have an anagram ("bad") of your solution. I would be interested in your solutions of 18dn, 30dn, 37dn and 41dn.

18dn, I have ARTIFICIALISE: ART+IF+I+CIA+(LIES)*. Presumably def. is "Switch to unnatural".
30dn is BENEFICIARIES: BENE (archaic word for prayers) +F+ICI (here in French=for avocat)+ARIES (sign).
37dn: INDICIA (symptoms): I+C inside INDIA.
41dn: GERMANENESS: relatively full is GERMAN (from Chambers: "A full brother or sister") + (SENSE)*.

Yeah, I got that shortly after realising that it was a 7-letter word required, not a 6...d'oh!
Think I've got all the answers now - still haven't got the theme! More staring required...

Thanks very much for those solutions. I was about to say it couldn't be "joiner" but I had no idea what it should be! Thanks Rickye.

Plodding on here. Still need 5 12 16 21 36 40 46 47 48 4 8 17 32 38 44. Assume 44 is anagramatical
