Yes, the use of "topless parse" in The wordplay would be frowned upon here!

Topless parse? I can't open the link on this thread for some reason, but the one in my sent mail reads:
Get up with one in the rear? (5)
Perhaps I'm being dense again...
Actually, this one seems a bit worse.

Yes mate, I didn't/don't want to use ar?e in case anybody complains, perhaps my use of parse was confusing, carse would have made it more obvious.

OK. As I said, dense.
One thing I love about American puzzles is that they seldom resort to using arcane words. As much as I like Azed, it drives me nuts to encounter all the Carib weapons and Tahitian fruits. I grew up with the Atlantic Monthly puzzles, which are still my favorites, and one of these included a "warning" that a certain answer was an unfamiliar word. The clue seemed to indicate that "Greek soldier" was the definition, and I thought: "Surely it can't be hoplite." Indeed it was- that's how much unfamiliarity is frowned upon. Don't get me wrong; I love learning new words. But you know what I mean; obscurity can be a sort of crutch. The Atlantic puzzles were nonetheless brilliant.

Since I've brought the thread back to the top.
I'm thoroughly enjoying these and this was the best so far. I also rated "Tarzan" at 8d, "archival" at 26d, the "Peke"at 39d and my 2nd best "Marat" at 40d. Nice fluent clueing.

PS Still not finished my current read "The Handmaid's Tale". I'm alternating, almost on a daily basis, whether I'm truly enjoying it. The "choppy" writing style can grate!

Unfortunately, didn't scan my solutions for 2013-10, -09, & -08, and don't really want to do them again.

Does anyone have them? Perhaps Aristo with your subscription? I'll be glad to post them.

ginge: I can't stand her writing. I think Mr. Holt, on the other hand, is a born writer- hilarious stuff, but beautiful prose, with lightly worn erudition.
syzzie: I have to do it circuitously- downloading whole articles to get at the solution (and I don't know how to isolate it). If ginge has a particular question I'd be happy to check it out for him. I'll still ferret out the current solutions, but I'd rather not do a whole bunch of past ones unless they're really wanted.

Hi aristo and syzygy, thanks but without wishing to sound arrogant I don't really need solutions. I was only commenting on the use of a particular word rather than questioning the answer.
aristo, I am looking forward to reading Holt again, I think I mentioned I liked his co-written lampoon of Dame Margaret's biography but wasn't sure then or now if his influence was most dominant. You can now understand why I'm labouring over my current read although the chapters I read last night tilted me to a positive "review" again.
