Fascinating puzzle. I think I must have made a mistake in the top right as for 8d Famous hometown Tarsan, he's gone ape (8) I have ? T Z T ? E ? H which doesn't seem probable. Help!

I've got the extra Z in 23d, crossed with 36a.

The Republican strategist in 47a worked for Bush the younger- first name Karl.

If z is where you said I'd like your help with 23d.. I have ? I T Z E S and can see no connection with the clue

This is the only clue I have a question mark for (as mentioned above). The definition is church events, but I just don't see how the apparent homophone works.
