16d is the problem then. That's where the U is, though it's the extra letter in a crossing word! By the way, I wonder if 16d is an Americanism; everyone uses it- in fact I very seldom hear anyone using the proper past-tense verb.

You'd have to be fairly familiar with US politics (I think) to get the answer D is added to- but you no doubt are.

J forms an Arabic word (a familiar one); at least that's what I have.

Can't seem to get a clear enough copy
