Thanks bazza for your warning re 49. My thinking is:-
tom = name for a big bell
is attached to pet = cat
Indicating its sex .
I think I must have been thinking of the Great Tom at Westminster Palace prior to a new one called Big Ben.
Not sure of your Oxbridge clue. ( I thought I had finished too !!!)

I was thinking BB, did not know of Westminster Great Tom - but there is one in Oxford. If we are both happy with 28 we are finished.

Winnie thank you so much for your very kind words. It has indeed been a terrible time. Thanks also for all the wonderful clues, have solved three of them already and will work on the others. These quizzes are so infuriating sometimes but surprisingly can help others if they have also got things on their mind.
