Thanks bazza for your warning re 49. My thinking is:-
tom = name for a big bell
is attached to pet = cat
Indicating its sex .
I think I must have been thinking of the Great Tom at Westminster Palace prior to a new one called Big Ben.
Not sure of your Oxbridge clue. ( I thought I had finished too !!!)
