I'm very late checking in as I only bought the RT this afternoon. I've purposely not been peeking at this thread, but I did struggle with 7a and 8a, so thanks to chrisg for those.
I seem to be in the minority as regards the Olympics. The men's cycling time trial was just amazing here. I've never seen so many thousands of people all in one day, even though we are used to seeing tourists all year round. I don't think I will ever see the like again. It all seems a bit flat and very quiet today :(

Hi, Andy ftw. I think Jimmy Hogg would have preferred not to have me in his class. If he was ever working out the average time taken by twenty kids to run a hundred yards, I could be guaranteed to foul things up.

I was blessed, though, because there were a couple who were even worse than me. One was an albino. Very sad, because the guy just couldn't far enough ahead of him to allow him to run. The other was what we politely called a big sissy, so I was usually only third last.

Angelmcm. Try your veggies on tofu or quorn. They will then even look forward to cauliflower without a sauce. If you can't find any tofu, just chuck in a bit of India rubber. The taste and consistency is much the same.

Thanks again, Mondrian, and your less famous namesake who died in 1944.

Best wishes.

Hi Pipesmoker - I attended DHS from 1950-1954. When were you there? The happiest days of your life - I think not!

thought i'd see who this Jimmy Hogg is.
pretty much all that wiki has to say...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Hogg
...is;
"Hogg was appointed captain of Aberdeen in 1962, but was released in 1965."
is football an alternative to prison up there?

Hi Andy, my sentence was from 1958 to 1961. Not the happiest time of my life. I think my sister was there about the same time as you. Some of her contemporaries were Iris Aitken, Myra Hughes and Christine Johnstone. You might recognise the names. In my own time, there were some notables too. Probably the most famous was Ian, later Lord Bonomy, the High Court Judge. He was a nice bloke, but I dare say there may be some in Barlinie who do not share my opinion.

Trevor and Chrise, I have been of things to notdo while I am notwatching the Olympics. Today, I will notcut the grass. Tomorrow, I will notwash the car and on Sunday, I will nothoover the stairs. This last nothappening can be not done in many ways. Firstly, I will nothoover the odd numbered steps, then I will nothoover the even numbered steps. Next I will nothoover on the way up and then I will nothoover on the way down.

If anyone has any other suggestions for me to notdo, they will be most welcome.

Hi, Trevor. Jimmy Hogg was the boys' PE teacher at Dalziel High School in Motherwell. I think you were right that he had played football in a previous incarnation. He seemed to delight in taking his classes out to the nearby park to run round in circles. This was bad enough in May and June, but in February, it was even less fun. I still have miserable memories from my time in school.

We had another teacher, Lizzie Boa, who delighted in reminding those of us in the lowest intake class, that we were thick. We were well aware of this fact, so did not need to have it constantly brought to our attention. By now, if my prayers have been answered, she will be stoking the fires of hell.

Hi all - I don't wish to sound smug but I found this weeks fairly easy. I do have help from my husband on occasions - 9d and 19a -and every time he gives me an answer it's " Well that's 25% of the prize to me then!" but he's not holding his breath. Haven't won since 2000 when I got a Millennium Dictionary (it's still in the wrapper as I use my old one). Love 13d on the telly even the repeats.

Hi trevor & pipesmoker - Jimmy Hogg did play football but he had finished before 1950. I do remember Iris & Myra but not Christine. They were probably the year after me. If you let me know your surname I might have known your sister. Iris married Willie McKinnie & Myra - David Stark (from memory).Willie played golf at Colville Park.

Hi, Andy.

My sister's first name is Elma. You are right about Myra marrying David Stark. He latterly worked at Ravenscraig, but when I first met him, he was a TV engineer with, I think, Mills of Brandon Street. That seems an awful long time ago.
