I think 1d is a somewhat old-fashioned US term. I wrote it in based on crossers but took a while to parse. One of several cryptic definitions that extended solving time beyond near-record low.

Hi Geeker,

It must be nice to have the tables turned for once:-)

Yeah, Brendan. That's happened fairly often of late. Once I parsed 1d I thought it was a witty clue, but one that some solvers would object to. 😁

Thanks for the hint re 1d. I might have got it earlier if I hadn't got the wrong bird in 1d. I'd never heard of this and neither had my husband who mainly drinks alcohol free beer these days.

I still have lots to do. Perhaps a hint for 6d will set me right. And for 19d

6d is a double definition, "pure" and "Looking to get a hit from a drug, say". The second def. is funny but maybe a little shaky.

19d: Definition "dirty", parses as "wood" (3) inside "single" (5). It's a good clue.

Re 1d, I remember my mother used the term. In Ohio, where she was from, and a few other US states, it was the only ???? allowed back in her day.

Geeker, that "single" and "wood" part went completely over my head. as the containment indicator. I'd assumed it was a DD meaning "dirty" and also a carpentry term used to describe timber with only a single coat!
