Geeker
Your reference earlier to Private Eye, combined with ilippu’s reference to an adult joke, leads me to think that a more satisfactory, and potentially amusing, clue for 5d might have involved an accepted abbreviation for a particular country in place of the caveman reference.

The version (re 1d) that I knew, from the 60’s keg beer introduction, referred to Watneys ghastly Red Barrel and was “making love in a punt”.

All done except 2, which despite having 2 crossers simply refuses to yield. Any hints would be much appreciated.

Thanks Ianwill, I had never come across the word used with that meaning (I mean the solution) before, but Google confirms its use in US slang.

I normally struggle with Brummie and only got a couple on first pass, but managed to complete all but 2d in less than a very enjoyable hour.

Thank you to Brummie and great weekend everyone.

I’d only heard of it with “house” after it

I'm dissatisfied with my answer for 27a so it may well be wrong, as 22d may be - I'm not sure of the parsing for either. Can anybody help please?

22 is a sounds like
27 is irritating. It's also a sounds like, but not very close! Definition "cut". Rowan Atkinson not involved!

Sadly this didn't occupy me for the lion's share of my train journey to London but enjoyable all the same. Thanks Brummie. Hadn't heard of 1d as a thing before and in my world 23a has a different meaning to that but I daresay dictionaries would prove me wrong.

I liked the anagram clues. Quite well disguised.

FOI 9a. LOI 1d. COD 6d for it's clever construction.

Have a good Saturday all.
