Lovely gridfill, but as so often staring at a long list of 3 possibles isn't yielding. My assumption that what we're looking for is related to the subject hasn't helped. Kruger is often a bit sneaky - no bad thing, of course - and I wonder if what is wanted is completely unrelated. It would help to know the word lengths of the message, thus helping to interpret it for the final step.

Shouldn’t this thread be EV 1764? I’ll let Norah know. The gridfill was fun, the message an awful slog (and I still don’t have the fourth word, but the rest was more than enough to identify the “legend”). As people have commented on the Big Dave site, just 14,8 gave the game away: “there’s nothing else”!

I have most of what is spelled out by the 35 letters - I suspect I may have the wrong extra word in some cases - but the legend is still very much eluding me. My first thought was 3 down: 1 across's description of 26 across (3 words) but that seems too obvious. I'll go back to reading more on the subject.

AP, the third word in the message is the key. It took me a while to get it as I had incorrectly tagged one of the extra words.

Thanks for that Mattrom. It will give me something to work on but I now suspect I may have tagged more than one of the extra words wrongly, especially in 39 and 41 across and 9 down. At the moment I have the message beginning with a 6 followed by a 2 letter word.

AP, your 6, 2 is correct. The fifth word( of 6) is a long one, but I had enough letters to work it out.

Thanks for that Malone. I think/hope I now have the first 3 words. The first 2 letters of the next are proving tricky but that's probably because I've got the wrong extra word in each case. I'll go back to it later.
