Hi Snowwhite
I’d only say that in my view a hallmark of the best crossword clues is that they tell a story. It’s part of the reason why Araucaria’s ‘Poetical scene with surprisingly chaste Lord Archer vegetating (3,3,8,12)’ is remembered as one of finest cryptic clues of all time.
By the same token, a clue which is fine in terms of fodder (e.g. anagram of solution, anagram indicator, definition) but makes no real sense as a whole (for example 6d here) is, for me, not a very good clue.
In fact I think ‘Sound German wheels round’ passes the sense test in a way that 6d doesn’t, though it’s still not the greatest of surfaces by any means.
