Managed to finish this morning with a lot of help from forum and word search. Not a very satisfying experience but I always find Kite difficult sometimes impossible. Still some to parse but I’ve lost interest and as for the theme no idea!

I was quite busy yesterday and didn't get to look at the crossword until an hour in the evening. I always find Kite difficult, but have had a go and got a few. I've just read through this thread and noted down the hints. I'm hoping to have more time this afternoon to have a second go. I may be back if any of you are still around.

Well, I have found it fiendishly difficult, but have managed all but two.

They are 16d and 20ac. If no-one is around, I may have to leave it unfinished. But any hints would be welcome. Meanwhile I'll have another break and do some ironing. I can only do a few things at a time because it makes my back ache.

Stuck on 18 a and 19 d. It seems no one else is though... So not sure what I'm missing. Got the rest though. Hints would be appreciated.

16 d is the beer with the religious scholar inside

20 a the definition is from 17 and there is some previous discussion of the carriage. HTH

18a: definition "Sink", reversal of 3 ("neon" for example)

19d: defn "it shows sincerity", anag of the first 2 words in the clue. A foreign word, Brendan has some hints at the top of the thread.

19 has been much discussed, a Russian word associated with Gorbachev
Neon in 18a is one of potentially many examples. I think I have this right but I’m stuck with three that I cannot find any discussion of - everyone says the west side went easily! 2d, 4d and 11a have me beaten, after lots of help with others from the forum.

The parsing of 2D is 3,4,1; definition is the last word. For 4d start with a word that could mean bridges and replace P with C. In 11 it’s two first letters followed by a word for dirty.

I just realized that I wrote in 10 from the crossers but never parsed it. Any hints welcome.

10 seems to parse 1, (4 inside 3), 1. There's some discussion upthread.
