Grid filled. Stuck on the 5 special clues. It would be a great help to know how many letters (2 in the third one) need to be inserted in the clues. Hint?

I have 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 (though I don't think the 3 makes a very satisfactory clue).

For what it’s worth, I have 2 extra letters in the third 3 letter clue which seems to work fine. But I am a long way from completing the puzzle so caveat emptor.

I have a full grid and a very tentative 1 letter for the first clue, ? for the second, 2 (which could appear in either order) for the third, two possible 3s for the fourth, ? for the fifth (and am baffled by the endgame).

It’ll be no help Pythag, but I’m pretty sure we have the same two letters for the third three letter clue, I have three extra letters for the second, which again could go in either order. I too now have a full grid - and an empty mind. The silvered cells aren’t giving me much yet, either. Ho hum.

Apologies for possible confusion. I should have said that my 3 extra letters for the second affected clue could go either before or after the relevant elements in the wordplay.

Throck was correct in stating that the additions are 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 letters respectively (and that the added 3 make 24d slightly dodgy as a clue). There are so many possibilities for the additions that I confess I just Googled the first sentence of the preamble, got the theme, and worked backwards to get the additions. After too long of a grid stare looking for something profound, the highlighting was simple and perhaps a bit of a letdown,

Thanks, Buddy. Oh dear, it all rather goes to custard, doesn’t it? It’s been said before that the Cam puzzle suffers from not having an independent editor. (And I still think that my original 2 letter addition to the third affected clue - add ID to diving - works better than the dodgy 3!)

I’m being particularly dim with this one. I googled various tries for statements in 1676 and 1678 but the only things which came up were an obscure rising in the colonies and a well-known convoluted journey, neither of which seemed relevant. Am I missing something obvious?

I googled "find a statement" with the rest of the preamble sentence after "statement" "cut and pasted.

After further consideration the highlighting is actually quite clever - I missed it the first time around.
