Aha! Thanks. Plough on now that the way is lit.

Far from convinced that this is worth the several hours wasted. I now have the 12345 solved, and I agree that the 3 is poor. Is it worth trying to find the shading? The RH column seems to make vague sense, as does most of col. 9. A far less satisfying CAM puzzle than its forerunners, alas.

Well, I suppose I've learnt some interesting (to me) things about the author of the statement (Vectian by birth, organist and chorister at Oxford), but it wasn't much fun otherwise. I've given up on the shading.

... and I've just noticed that there's one silvered letter too few...

Might the silver cells provide, with a vivid imagination, the missing I?

... unless the title is a very weak and unconvincing indication of how we're supposed to supply the missing one...

I still can’t work out the 36 and 27 letter stuff. Are they in the firm of a spring - a spiral?

My copy of CAM arrived yesterday and, despite a fine Listener and a truly wonderful Inquisitor I've managed to find time to finish this. Well, apart from the problem that was - perhaps still is? - holding up my near namesake. What are we looking for?

It's still holding me up too. Have spent far too much time gazing at grid and getting nowhere.
